Neurofibromatosis is a chronic, life-long disorder and unfortunately we find that adults with NF often neglect their own care. Sometimes this is because once children are adults they simply aren’t prepared to take over their own care. They may be intimidated or overwhelmed at the idea of making an appointment; they may not know what questions to ask; or they may be confused by the complications of NF or the bureaucracy of the system.

Children really do become adults in the blink of an eye and preparing them for the onslaught of adulthood starts at birth.

This year at our October 25th event, Dr. Parag Shah, the Medical Director of the Chronic Illness Transition Team at Lurie Children’s Hospital, will talk to us about transitioning to adult care. He will also take the time to meet with our kids to discuss with them how to get ready to take over their care.
