NF Midwest Campers Return!
This year eleven campers and counselors from the NF Midwest region attended Camp New Friends in West Virginia. NF Midwest helped with travel and/or camp tuition for nine of those campers. We also provided support funds to the Brainy Camps organization specifically for Camp New Friends.
Today we greeted eight of the campers and counselors on their return at O’Hare.
Formed by social workers from the Children’s National Medical Center, Camp New Friends (CNF) offers children and teens with NF seven days and six nights of summer fun and social connections. Camp New Friends serves to reduce the stigma and isolation that is often associated with neurological disorders and chronic health conditions. The camp also provides parents with respite.
Condition specific camps such as this have proven to be an effective way for children to learn more about their condition and to develop adaptive behaviors. At Camp New Friends, children learn from peers and adult volunteers who live effectively with these same health conditions and are offered hope for the future. They also find support and friendships for a lifetime.
If you have a child with neurofibromatosis age 7 to 17, start thinking now about sending them to Camp new Friends next summer. For more information contact NF Midwest (; 630-945-3562) or go to brainycamps.com.
Also, on August 7th we will be holding our annual Take a Swing at NF Golf Benefit in West Chicago, IL to support camp and kids programs. If you have a foursome to golf, would like to join us for dinner, or have prizes for raffle there is still time! Find out more information here.
