Meet Steve – Doin’ It 4NF
Steve R. was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 later in life and completely lost his hearing at age 55 after 3 brain surgeries. Through it all he found a renewed sense of purpose along with a strong desire to reach out to others. Supported by his wonderful wife, Diane, the two of them quickly stepped up to make a difference in the NF cause.
In 2009 Steve joined NF Midwest’s NF2 Action Committee (NF2ACT) and has served on it it ever since. This committee sets the NF2 agenda for our yearly symposium (which is Oct. 25th this year. Be sure to mark your calendars!). They also lead any funding decisions on neurofibromatosis type 2 research for NF Midwest; serve as support for people with NF Type 2 in the Midwest community and generally lead us in all our NF2 programs.
Steve R. keeps Doin’ It 4NF.
In 2011 Steve spearheaded a funding opportunity called Birdies for Charity which is a program through John Deere. He found, and continues to work on the logistics, for what we lovingly call a “No Brainer” event.
All anyone needs to do is make a pledge and guess at the number of birdies that will be made during the John Deere Classic. A 2014 Chevy Cruze is awarded to one person who guesses the right amount. For instance, in 2013 the golfers shot a total of 2142 birdies.
The pledge can be a fixed amount like $40.00 or per birdie – such as .01 per birdie (which in 2013 would have been $21.42).
John Deere underwrites the entire expense so 100% of the donation goes to the cause, PLUS a yet to be determined bonus of 5% to 8%.
It’s super easy!
Please show support for Steve’s work by making a pledge online now (you’ll be invoiced later). Be sure to spread the word.
